The name “Sunderbans” is believed to come from the word meaning “forest of Sundari,” referring to the Sundari tree, a large mangrove tree that is valuable for fuel. The southern part of the forest turns into a mangrove swamp, home to many wild animals and crocodile-filled rivers. Netidhopani Watch Tower
The Netidhopani Watch Tower offers a view of the remains of a 400-year-old Shiva Temple. It is believed that a road once built by King Pratapaditya to protect the coastal area lies to the right of the forest, though it is now covered in earth. There is also a freshwater pond nearby. The tower can accommodate up to 20 people at a time.
Dobanki Camp
Dobanki Camp is famous for its Canopy Walk through the forest. Many visitors feel that their trip to the Sundarbans isn’t complete without experiencing the Canopy Walk, which provides a unique view of the area from above.
Sajnekhali Tiger Reserve
The Sajnekhali Tiger Reserve is the main attraction in the Sundarbans. It is the only place where visitors can safely enter the reserve area. The site also features a Mangrove Interpretation Centre, a museum, a watchtower, a crocodile pond, an Olive Ridley turtle enclosure, and a Herbivore Acclimatization Centre where lost deer are rehabilitated.
Hamilton’s Bungalow
Hamilton’s Bungalow, located in Gosaba, is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Sundarbans. It was built by Sir Daniel Mackinnon Hamilton, who also started the largest cooperative society in the area.
Mangrove Interpretation Centre
The Mangrove Interpretation Centre is located at the entrance of the reserve and is managed by the forest department. It offers valuable information about the local ecosystem and includes a small turtle and crocodile hatchery, a wildlife museum, and a blackboard that updates visitors on the latest tiger sightings.
Bonnie Camp
Bonnie Camp is one of the most scenic watchtowers in the Sundarbans. At 50 feet, it is the tallest watchtower in the area. Like other watchtowers, it has a freshwater pond where local wildlife often gathers throughout the day.
Best Time to Visit Sundarbans
The best time to visit Sundarbans National Park is between October and March. During these months, the weather is pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the park. Winter is especially good for both a comfortable day trip through the dense forest and for spotting wildlife, as animals often come out to bask in the sun along the riverbanks. You can also enjoy a boat safari and try various local foods offered during the trip. Visiting in other seasons can be less comfortable for a safari. The summer months are very hot, with high temperatures that can make daytime excursions unbearable. The monsoon season brings heavy rains, which cause the river levels to rise, making safaris in small boats more risky.
