Jhansi is a historic city located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, in the Bundelkhand region. It sits on the banks of the Pahuj River in the southern part of the state. Jhansi is the administrative center of both the Jhansi district and division. Known as the “Gateway to Bundelkhand,” it lies between the Pahuj and Betwa rivers at an elevation of 285 meters. The city is about 415 kilometers from New Delhi and 99 kilometers south of Gwalior. Jhansi originally grew around its stone fort, which stands on a nearby rock. The city’s ancient name was Balwantnagar. From 1817 to 1854, Jhansi was the capital of the princely state ruled by Maratha kings. In 1854, the British annexed the state, and although Damodar Rao’s claim to the throne was rejected, Rani Lakshmibai ruled Jhansi from June 1857 to June 1858.
