Barmer is the main city and district headquarters of the Barmer district in Rajasthan. In the 12th century, this region was known as Mallani. The name “Barmer” comes from its founder, Bahada Rao, also called Bar Rao, who belonged to the Parmar dynasty. He founded a town called “Juna,” which is about 25 km from today’s Barmer city. Later, Rawat Luka, the grandson of Rawal Mallinath, along with his brother Rawal Mandalak, established their rule in Juna Barmer. In 1552 AD, Rawat Bhima, a brave warrior from their lineage, founded the present city of Barmer and moved the capital there. He also built a fort, known as Barmer Garh, on a hill. Although the hill is 1,383 feet high, the fort was constructed at 676 feet for better safety.
