Battambang is a city in northwestern Cambodia, located along the Sangkae River. It is known for its French colonial buildings, including the old Governor’s House called Sala Khaet. The Battambang Provincial Museum displays items from nearby ancient Khmer temples. Phare Ponleu Selpak, a local circus and arts school, helps children from poor communities learn performing arts. Just outside the city, you can explore the ruins of Ek Phnom, a pagoda from the 11th century with detailed stone carvings.

To the west of the city is Banan Temple, set on a hill with five towers from the Angkor era. Phnom Sampeau is a mountain temple with great views and caves that have Buddhist shrines. Some of these caves were sadly used by the Khmer Rouge as killing sites. Not far from there is the Kamping Puoy reservoir, once built by forced labor under the Khmer Rouge and now a relaxing spot for locals. Battambang is also known for the “bamboo train,” a simple wooden platform on wheels that travels on old railway tracks, used to move people and goods between the city and nearby villages.
